How we began
Dogs have been part of our lives since childhood. Our first dog together was a Jack Russell Terrier who spent 17 wonderful years with us. Later, we welcomed a short-haired Chihuahua, followed by a long-haired one. We fell in love with this small breed, and Chihuahuas became part of our family.
Our love of Chihuahuas led us to breed them responsibly through a registered kennel. That is how the Small Darling story began.
Small Darling
The Small Darling kennel name has been registered and internationally protected with the FCI since 2019. We are members of the Slovak Chihuahua and Papillon Breeders Club and breed long-haired and short-haired Chihuahuas under the rules of organised breeding.
Our kennel is registered with and inspected by the relevant veterinary authority. We focus on attentive care, suitable living conditions and the responsible selection of breeding dogs.
A dream becomes reality
When we decided to devote more of our time to breeding, we sold our flat in Trnava and bought an older house with a large garden near the city. Step by step, we made it a place where we could live with our animals and provide suitable conditions for them.
Alongside the Chihuahuas, six parrots, two cats, two tortoises and a female Golden Retriever share our home. Life here is rarely dull.
Health and wellbeing
Our Chihuahuas receive regular care, including from Dr Garaj in Sereď and Dr Pašek in Trnava. Breeding dogs undergo the required checks, including patella and heart examinations, and meet the conditions for breeding approval before joining our breeding programme.
When planning a litter, we consider the parents’ health, ancestry, temperament and suitability. Care and socialisation from the puppies’ first weeks of life are equally important to us.
Our approach to breeding
For us, breeding Chihuahuas is not about producing as many puppies as possible. We deliberately have fewer litters than the rules allow and plan each pairing with the parents’ health, ancestry, temperament and suitability in mind.
We are pleased by our Chihuahuas’ success at shows, but their health and wellbeing remain more important. This means we do not necessarily have puppies all year round. We would rather wait for a suitable litter than breed to meet demand.
